Just Relax…

It’s imperative to have an understanding of how your nervous system, particularly when it’s unregulated, can impact your overall health.

Many people are living with an over active sympathetic nervous system – i.e. they are constantly in fight or flight.

Now, stress is inevitable. It’s part of being human. And sometimes stress can be helpful as it propels us to get a bunch of stuff done.

But from an ancestral and evolutionary standpoint, our sympathetic nervous system was meant to be used sparingly for hunting, running away from danger, or surviving the elements.

When you’re constantly “on”, it can negatively impact your health in a number of ways from interfering with digestion, restful sleep, or concentration just to name a few.

Here is a way helpful graphic to see the contrast between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system.

Obviously, both states are necessary and beneficial. But what I want you to notice is if you constantly live in a sympathetic state, how it can impact your day to day bodily functions.

The first step to change is gaining awareness. If you’ve identified that you may be in a chronic state of stress and fight or flight, try to find one way to actively relax.

This may look like breathing exercises, a 2-3 minute mediation, prioritizing sleep, or turning off your phone for a period of time.
